Considering studying the art and design at college – read on to understand some key advantages of doing so.

Art and design courses are known to help students develop their creativity and imagination. However, that isn’t all that students can benefit from by enrolling onto an Art & Design course. The nature of the subject gives students the chance to develop several other key skills and improve problem solving. Both of which are vital for life after education and are fundamental abilities that are recognised by potential employers.

Developing Self Expression & Confidence

Art and design students are tasked to work from a blank canvas. Project briefs are issued that can be interpreted in a multitude of ways, meaning students interpret them in their own way, often talking through with their teachers that interpretation. This helps to develop self-confidence as students are encouraged to discuss their thoughts and understanding. This is a vital transferrable skill which will help students grow. Imagine having to give a presentation to your peers or voice your opinion in a debate, the core practices of an Art & Design course, will prepare you for that.

Improving and maintaining a healthy mental wellbeing

Choosing to study Art & Design provides students with a different style of thinking. A diverse selection of subjects can help keep students engaged and happy in their studies. Art & Design also offers students an outlet for their thoughts providing a platform for them to voice opinions or ideas. Being encouraged to showcase their thoughts can help students clear their minds give them an outlet to voice their frustrations.

Develop critical thinking and a broader mindset

The curriculum of Art & Design is brief orientated, and open ended. There isn’t always a ‘right answer’, so students are urged to think outside the box. Part of an Art & Design course will be to review their peer’s work and see how briefs assigned have been interpreted by other students, improving awareness and acceptance of others.

If you are considering studying Art & Design, here at the Online College of Art & Design – OCAD , we offer students the opportunity to study Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media which will help students acquire all the above skills and more.
