FAQs

What are Functional Skills, and how do they differ from GCSEs?

Functional Skills are practical qualifications in Maths, English, and Digital Skills, designed to build real-world abilities—like budgeting, writing professional emails, and navigating digital tools. Unlike traditional GCSEs, which often focus on theoretical content, Functional Skills emphasise “knowing how” over “knowing that,” with competency-based assessments rather than memorisation   .
For art students at OCAD, strong literacy and numeracy skills not only improve administrative tasks like writing artist statements or managing art finances but also enhance critical thinking and creative planning.

Is Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent to a GCSE?

Yes—Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths or English is widely recognised as equivalent to a GCSE grade 4/C, meeting entry requirements for many employers and universities  . At OCAD, this means you can progress into higher education—including art degrees or apprenticeships—with confidence, even if you missed the traditional GCSE route.

Can Functional Skills help boost my art studies or support my university application?

Absolutely. Functional Skills equip art students with essential communication, analytical, and digital skills—for example, writing compelling project descriptions or using editing software confidently. Embedding these competencies alongside creative practice strengthens your portfolio and academic profile, making university applications more compelling and well-rounded.

Are Functional Skills Level 1 and Level 2 different, and which should I choose?

Yes—they differ in complexity. Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE grades 1–3, while Level 2 matches grade 4/C  .
If you’re aiming for university or a career in art-related industries, Level 2 is typically required as it aligns with entry standards and provides solid groundwork for progression  .

Can I study Functional Skills fully online?

Yes! Functional Skills courses can be completed entirely online with flexible study modes—especially useful for independent learners and artists balancing creative work and commitments  . At OCAD, our bespoke package includes an initial assessment, 100% online lessons, specialist tutor support, live tutorials, and guidance every step of the way.

How are Functional Skills assessed—pass/fail or graded?

Assessments are pass/fail, not graded. Exams emphasise practical tasks over test-taking theory  . For art students, this means demonstrating real-world capability—like interpreting data for project budgeting or crafting clear, polished artist statements.

Do Functional Skills ever expire?

No—they never expire. Once you’ve passed, your qualification is valid for life  . This timeless credential boosts your versatility as an artist or learner throughout your career.

Can universities accept Functional Skills instead of GCSEs?

Many universities do accept Functional Skills Level 2 as an alternative to GCSEs, but requirements vary—so we always recommend checking with the specific institution  . At OCAD, achieving Functional Skills alongside your art course makes you a more adaptable and academically resilient candidate for art degree programs.

How difficult are Functional Skills compared to GCSEs?

Generally, Functional Skills are seen as more accessible, focusing on practical real-life applications rather than abstract theory. Many learners find this approach less daunting, especially when relating it to creative or real-world scenarios—like project costing or clear written communication in artistic contexts.

What benefits do Functional Skills provide for future education and employment?

Functional Skills offer a strong foundation for pursuing Level 3 qualifications, vocational courses, or entering the workforce  . For art students, this translates to enhanced career readiness, smoother transitions into art degrees or apprenticeships, and better preparedness for professional life—whether that’s curating, freelance work, or studio management.

How the Online College of Art & Design Works

Here at OCAD, we offer more than just online art classes. Students get access to their own online studio space, where you can work through the course materials and develop your artistic skills.

In our online studio platform, you’ll find your course units and assignments along with supporting resources. Access video tutorials, step-by-step guides, video recordings of live interactive lessons, and other skills development tools.

Our interactive online art classes are taught live by an experienced and friendly teacher. This style of taught course is completely unique to our online curriculum – giving students the opportunity to learn from a live teacher and peers.

You’ll develop an art portfolio throughout the course, uploading photographs of completed work and assignments for constructive, friendly feedback. Not only does this help you progress your artistic abilities, it also means you complete the course with a portfolio to kickstart your creative career or further study.

Furthermore, students also get the chance to speak one-on-one with an experienced and qualified personal tutor. You’ll receive personalised support and feedback to help you progress. Our online studio also allows students to view profiles, comment on each other’s work and communicate with fellow students if they wish.
