Cross Cultural Collaborative Inc

About Centre

We offer a unique opportunity to experience Ghana and to interact with Africans on a personal level – to see for yourself what Africa is really like. We do this by offering residencies at our cultural center and through workshops with indigenous artists. At our cultural center we have areas where people can create their own workshops – often on our rooftop with an inspiring view of the ocean. For the workshops materials are supplied and for self motivated residencies participants supply their own material which can often be purchased on arrival. We are located in a fishing village which offers cultural inspiration.

Sometimes workshops are held at Aba House ,.our cultural center, and often we take you to the traditional village where the indigenous artists live and work. We are flexible in our offerings and work with participants to best meet their needs and expectations.

We do not have traditional studios:

As with many things in Africa we have space available to create work areas. Because we have beautiful weather and a spacious roof deck most participants prefer to work there. If someone has a project that requires an enclosed area, we have that also.We live in a neighborhood where people interact and are curious about what you, the artist, are doing. And since you are in Ghana to lean about the culture this gives you a chance to be part of the community. If you are doing a ceramic workshop we can arrange for work to be fired. And, as stated, for other techniques materials are included by the teachers.

Aba graduated from Rhode Island School of Design (Providence,.RI -USA) with a degree in Art Education – she taught crafts for many years in the USA, was a founding member of Cambridge Artists Co-operative Gallery (Cambridge,MA – USA) – has written articles for crafts magazines, worked as a potter and has presented at conferences in Canada, Japan and the USA.and has helped start an art centered program in Oaxaca, Mexico.

She was always interested in African Art and after a visit to Ghana she focused her work in Africa and has taught in Ghana, apprenticed with indigenous Ghanaian artisans and became the director of Cross Cultural Collaborative,Inc, a 501(c)3 NGO and Aba Tours which offers culturally centered tours in Ghana.

One of Aba’s programs in Ghana works with children in her village teaching the children to be creative and self confident. When he was 7 years old Michael became one of her students and now ,in his 30’s, he is the co-director of Cross Cultural Collaborative. He brings fresh ideas to the program and as an “alumni” understands the aims of the program.

The African culture needs interpreting to Westerners and Michael is perfect in that role. Aba manages the logistics and organizes the programs.
