Students may also benefit from relationships with their fellow online students as they can view profiles and comment on each others’ artwork if they wish.

Structure of the course

The programme is structured into four distinct stages: the Exploratory Stage, Pathway Stage, Confirmatory Stage, and Progression Stage. Each stage lasts 12 to 24 weeks, depending on whether you study full-time or part-time. Extensions are available if needed, ensuring flexibility to suit your learning journey.

1. Exploratory Stage

This introductory stage allows you to delve deeply into the world of art and design, gaining insights into various disciplines. You’ll experiment with a wide range of materials, processes, and techniques, while developing essential skills in drawing and photography as starting points for creative work.

You’ll explore five project pathways, selecting three to study:

  • Photography (mandatory)
  • Fine Art
  • Graphic Design and Illustration
  • 3D (Architecture, 3D Design, Sculpture)
  • Fashion and Textiles

2. Pathway Stage

In this stage, you’ll specialise in the discipline that excites and inspires you the most. Guided by feedback from your tutors, who will review your work from the Exploratory Stage, you’ll make a fully informed decision. The final choice is yours, allowing you to focus on the pathway that aligns with your passions and ambitions.

3. Confirmatory Stage

The Confirmatory Stage is the culmination of your foundation diploma and determines your final grade. With the guidance of your tutor, you’ll write a Statement of Intent, outlining your vision for your Final Major Project.

Your Final Major Project is entirely practical and can take any form you choose, such as:

  • A showreel
  • A dress or textile piece
  • A series of photographs
  • A painting
  • An animation
  • An architectural design
  • A video game concept
  • This stage gives you the freedom to bring your creative ideas to life, showcasing your unique skills and vision.

4. Progression Stage

The final stage is all about preparing for degree-level study at Falmouth University. Tutors from Falmouth will offer personalised guidance and support, ensuring you feel confident, inspired, and fully prepared to begin your BA degree journey.
